December 2001

A December to Remember

An extremely busy December 2001 brought a variety of activities and experiences to the PGCC Family.

The month began with many hands stringing lights, hanging garlands and wreaths, and setting up the Christmas trees. Thank you, all who helped to bring the beauty of Christmas to us!

Our first “Christmas d’ Elegance” was a huge success. More than 600 people enjoyed the stirring music of Stephen Nielson and Ovid Young. Thanks to Kent Simcoe, everyone in the room was able to see the pianists’ hands via video camera. An army of volunteers sold tickets, set up tables, chairs and beverage stations, ordered food and supplies, decorated, set tables, served beverages, greeted attendees, washed dishes and cleaned up — not once but twice. Everyone who had a part in these great evenings is to be thanked and congratulated for a job well done!

“Church in the round” on Sunday, December 9 was a new and meaningful experience, as we shared communion around the tables and sang carols together.

The beautiful Christmas Eve service was the culmination of a great deal of effort on the part of many people. We extend profound thanks to the ladies who cut and sewed costumes, the choir and soloists who rehearsed many long hours, the reading and drama participants, those who designed, built and erected the stable and manger, designed and operated the lighting, set up and operated the sound and slides, the ushers and greeters, and the children who so beautifully portrayed the nativity. The evening culminated in the lighting of candles throughout the auditorium as we sang, “Silent Night! Holy Night!”

Doris Friedrichs irons part of a costume she cut out for the Christmas Eve program. On the counter next to her are dozens of yards of fabric obtained and organized by Irene O’Brien.

Setting up the stable in preparation for the Christmas Eve program are (left to right) Wayne Dack, Pete Lamarche, Leon Dean and Irv Dahlin.

Angels, shepherds and kings join Mary and Joseph at the stable during dress rehearsal.
