Report by Marie Cartwright -- The trip to the Ukraine was so fantastic. I wish I could show you all my pictures. The babies in the orphanages were so touching. The boys at the prison camp who were so well behaved (ages between 10 and 17) gave us undivided attention. They were so receptive of us.
Then there was the Senior center where there were "drop ins." They would come to see what help they could get. How they loved us to give them hugs and teddy bears. Then the preschool kids (off the street kids).
All these places and people wanted so much to be loved and get hugs. Everyone heard the Gospel and we told them about our families and showed pictures of us. We gave them food and clothes (from the Josh McDowell ministry) and little "friendship gifts" that we brought over in our suitcases. And we gave them the Teddy Bears which were also shipped by the ministry. Everyone loves a teddy bear to hold and hug. These people are in such need of love and care. It was a tear-jerker in many cases.
But our translators were just absolutely wonderful (we had one for every 5 of us). I went with 3 others and the translator into a home for a lunch after church. The gentleman of the house is a Chiropractor and he gave me a back & neck treatment. Boy was he good. The food they served there and at the hotel and on the planes (8 of them) was absolutely wonderful.
I told our host family that I'd like to have her as my personal cook and him as my personal Doctor. A doctor over there gets about $40- a month unless he is a personal physician to those who could afford it. Then he would get anywhere from $500 to $1,000 a month.
Well, if you are interested you can log on to a web site: www.josh.org and then go to "Russia" and you can get a pretty good report from day one.
Well for now, I love you! Marie
